Stranraer 1-1 Clyde

Scorers: Stranraer – O’Donnell (37); Clyde – Hilton (45)

Former Stranraer man James Hilton returned to haunt his old club and deny them their first league win of the season.

The Blues were poor in the last home league encounter when they lost against Edinburgh City but looked much improved against Clyde.

Chris Aitken named the same side that had lost away to East Kilbride a week ago, with Deryn Lang, Robbie Foster and Ronan Hughes all missing.

Clyde also made the trip down the A77 looking for their first three points and almost got off to the ideal start.

Taylor Sutherland raced onto a through ball with only five minutes on the clock and rounded goalkeeper Josh Lane.

The striker managed to get his shot away but Scot Rough was back on the goal line to make the clearance.

Lewis Reid was denied his first Stranraer goal

Then, four minutes later, Rough’s defensive partner, Lewis Reid, thought he had his first goal for the club.

Finn Ecrepont’s free-kick into the box was met by the diving Reid, who put his header beyond the reach of Jay Hogarth, only to see it chopped off by referee Gary Hanvidge.

Both teams were creating openings with Hilton pulling a shot across goal and wide at one end and Corey O’Donnell blasting over at the other.

Finally, the deadlock was broken on 37 minutes with a well worked move.

Aaron Quigg battled well to win the ball in the middle of the park and exchanged passes with Sallu Turay.

Quigg then played the ball into the box for O’Donnell, who took a touch and then curled the ball round the onrushing Hogarth.

O’Donnell was congratulated by fellow forward Sallu Turay

Aitken would have been hoping for his side to hold out until the half time interval but saw them fall agonisingly short.

Hilton twisted to get space beyond Ecrepont before collecting a return ball from Andy Murdoch and then firing across Lane and into the bottom corner of the net.

There was more of the same in the second half and Clyde came within a whisker of turning the game on its head.

A poor defensive header found Murdoch on the edge of the box and his curling effort looked destined for the top corner, only to fly the wrong side of the target.

Then, with 20 minutes left, Stranraer came close to restoring their advantage.

Mark Russell was patient out wide before delivering a cross into the box, with Ecrepont managing to get across his marker but head straight at the visiting number one.

In the end, neither team could find that vital second goal and so it was a point apiece.
