Scorers: Stranraer – Dunne (85); Dumbarton – Honeyman (36)

A close range finish from Evan Dunne helped Stranraer rescue a point against in-form Dumbarton.

The home side dominated possession and created plenty of chances but it was not until five minutes from the end that they were able to put the ball in the back of the net.

That came after they trailed for more than 45 minutes following Scott Honeyman’s impressive shot from distance.

Home boss Chris Aitken made two changes from the defeat at Annan Athletic seven days earlier.

Fit again Deryn Lang came back into the team alongside Daniel McManus while Jordan Stuart dropped to the bench and Dominic Plank was ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

Stranraer started the game on the front foot and were almost given a helping hand by a former Blue.

Sallu Turay struck the post for Stranraer

Mark Durnan was well short with his attempted back pass and Aaron Quigg ran through on goal.

Credit to goalkeeper Aidan Rice though, who stood tall and managed to block the shot with a leg.

As the half wore on, Dumbarton would come more into the tie with Honeyman’s shot across goal blocked by Finn Ecrepont.

Josh Todd, Honeyman and Kristian Webster all had shots off target for the visitors before Stranraer came close at the other end.

Dunne won a loose ball in midfield before finding Lang in the middle of the park.

He played it out to Ecrepont, whose cross into the box found Quigg just outside the six-yard box.

He spun and got a shot away but Rice made an incredible save and then diverted Sal Turay’s follow up onto the post before finally smothering the loose ball.

Chris Aitken’s men rescued a point

Dumbarton would soon make their hosts pay with the only goal of the first half.

Honeyman was given too much room and blasted home an impressive shot from beyond 25 yards.

Stranraer had created plenty of chances and enjoyed possession in the first half and the game continued in much the same form after the break.

Lewis Reid saw a drive from distance go wide while Ecrepont’s powerful free-kick was tipped round the post.

Despite that, Dumbarton could have wrapped up the points in the final 10 minutes.

Alex Smith flicked the ball into the path of substitute Ally Roy, who played a teasing ball along the six-yard box.

Stranraer substitute Lewis Hunter managed to get something on it and that was just enough to put off Gordon Walker sliding in at the back post.

Almost immediately, Stranraer got their leveller.

Evan Dunne grabbed an important equaliser

A quickly taken free-kick caught out a sleeping Dumbarton defence and McManus delivered a low cross where Dunne was waiting at the back post to tap home.

Five minutes left and Stranraer had one more chance to complete the turnaround.

Lang was surrounded by three defenders on the edge of the box but managed to find just enough space to turn and get a shot away.

Unfortunately, it drifted the wrong side of the left post as both sides had to settle for a point.
