Stranraer 3-1 Dumbarton

Scorers: Stranraer – Mason (55) and Dobbie (59 and 72); Dumbarton – Honeyman (32)

A quickfire double helped Stranraer fight back from trailing at half time to secure three points against Dumbarton.

Both sides enjoyed league victories last weekend, with Stranraer winners at Forfar while Dumbarton triumphed against Elgin City.

Similarly, both teams made one change from the winning line-ups.

Lewis Gillie missed out for the hosts through injury as Kenzi Nair came into the team, while Kai Kirkpatrick came in for the injured Owen Hartington in the visitors’ line-up.

Stranraer started positively and Finn Ecrepont’s corner clipped the crossbar as the Blues enjoyed plenty of possession.

However, it was Dumbarton who created the better chances.

Scott Honeyman and Robert Cleary both fired too close to Max Currie while former Stranraer goalkeeper Harry Broun did well to turn Ecrepont’s deflected shot round the post.

It would be Frank McKeown’s men who held the lead at the break though.

Michael Doyle’s cross evaded the Stranraer defence and Honeyman reacted quickest, taking a touch and then firing beyond Currie.

Whatever was said in the home dressing room at half time clearly had the desired impact.

Seb Mason was a popular goalscorer after an impressive start to his loan spell at Stranraer

Only 10 minutes of the second half had been played when Stranraer found their leveller.

A quickly taken throw-in caught out the Dumbarton defence and Aaron Quigg raced into the box.

The midfielder cut the ball back and Seb Mason was in the right place to slot home his first goal for the club.

The second goal was not too far away but it would be temporarily delayed when Broun pulled off a stunning save to deny Mason at close range.

Ecrepont whipped in the corner and in the scramble it was Dobbie who remained composed as he back-heeled it over the line from close range.

Any chance of Dumbarton taking something from the game was effectively ended with 18 minutes left.

In truth, it came in bizarre fashion.

Stranraer were awarded a throw-in and Zach Bruce quickly played it to Dobbie.

Goalkeeper Broun was out of his goal when Dobbie then rolled the ball into an unguarded net.

It was all Stranraer now and Dobbie almost turned provider when a sumptuous pass split the defence.

Substitute James Dolan ran through and curled a lovely effort which flew just wide.

Then, as the game entered stoppage time, only the frame of the goal denied Robbie Foster before Jordan Stuart put the loose ball wide.

Dumbarton had one last opportunity when Nair, who enjoyed a near flawless performance, was penalised for pulling down Deryn Lang.

However, Currie was equal to Leighton McIntosh’s spot kick and pushed the shot to safety.

Goalkeeper Max Currie saved from the spot to ensure the points would go to Stranraer

After struggling to click into gear in the first half, Stranraer ran out deserved winners with an impressive second 45 minutes.
