Stranraer 0-0 Edinburgh City

A goalless draw was enough to see Stranraer move to the top of the League Two table.

Chris Aitken had received the manager of the month award while Lewis Dobbie picked up the player of the month prize after an impressive September.

October started with a game against an Edinburgh City side who have also been going well.

Aitken was able to welcome back Archie Traynor and Seb Mason while Dom Plank was named on the bench for the first time this season.

In contrast, Edinburgh City were able to name an entirely different starting line-up from the side that had lost to Formartine United in the KDM Evolution Trophy.

The Blues came out of the blocks quickest with an early free-kick that should have found its way into the net.

Beejay Coll delivered into the box and Traynor lifted it over a defender before then putting his shot wide of the target in just the second minute.

There was plenty going on but, in truth, efforts on goal were few and far between.

Archie Traynor’s early chance was the closest either side would come in the first half

Daniel McManus lifted one over the bar when the ball broke to him in the box while Keir Foster saw a tame effort bounce wide of goal at the other end.

Then, good play down the right saw Evan Dunne and Dobbie combine.

Stranraer’s top scorer lifted a cross over the Edinburgh defence but Aaron Healy was unable to find the target.

Early in the second half, Tommy North managed to weave his way through but, again, his shot was over Max Currie’s goal.

Evan Dunne was a force for Stranraer at both ends of the park

Stranraer were the next to threaten as Dobbie did well in midfield.

The frontman saw the pitch open up in front of him but his shot was high and wide.

Plank was given the final 20 minutes or so and quickly reminded the home fans as to what they had been missing.

Stranraer could have won it at the very end with two good chances.

Dom Plank made a popular cameo appearance for the final half hour

First, Dunne saw his run from the halfway line halted just outside of the box.

Dobbie’s free-kick had the beating of Mark Weir but it came back off the face of the crossbar.

Then, Mark McLuckie’s close range header was only just over the target.

A game that really lacked anything resembling a clear-cut chance or a meaningful shot on target but a point that was enough to put Stranraer top.

Dobbie’s late free kick crashed against the crossbar

A long, long way still to go but Aitken will be delighted to see his side sitting above all others after a quarter of the season.
