Stranraer 3-1 Forfar Athletic

Scorers: Stranraer – Dolan (Pen 19), Edgar (81) and Lang (87); Forfar Athletic – Slater (61)

Two goals in the final 10 minutes helped Stranraer to a third consecutive win.

James Dolan’s first half penalty had been cancelled out by Craig Slater just after the hour mark.

However, Stranraer reacted well and goals from Ryan Edgar and Deryn Lang ensured three League Two points were coming to Stair Park for the first time this season.

Manager Chris Aitken named the same starting line-up that had defeated Glenafton Athletic in the Scottish Cup while Forfar were missing experienced goalkeeper Marc McCallum.

Stranraer tested stand-in goalkeeper Neil Stafford twice in the opening quarter of an hour.

First, the goalkeeper was in the right place to keep out an Edgar header before he held onto Aaron Quigg’s low drive from outside the box.

Home fans did not have long to wait for the opening goal, though.

James Dolan opened the scoring from the spot after Jordan Stuart was upended in the box

Jordan Stuart and Finn Ecrepont did well down the left before Stuart managed to get the beating of two defenders.

He then attempted to beat Matty Allan and was brought down by the Forfar man, with referee Josh Hay pointing to the spot.

Dolan then sent Stafford the wrong way from the spot to give Stranraer a deserved lead.

Forfar failed to find the target in the opening 45 minutes but they did come close as Allan nodded wide as he tried to pull his side level.

Stranraer held the lead into the half time break and came close twice early in the second half.

First, Quigg saw a header go off target and then birthday boy Scot Rough saw a goalbound effort blocked on the line.

Forfar were again off target when Jake Dolzanski headed wide before, at the other end, Stuart came close to a memorable first league goal.

He strode forward unchallenged and took aim from fully 30 yards with Stafford well beaten as the shot flew just wide of the post.

Hometown hero Ryan Edgar scored for the second week running

Forfar would pull level with their first shot on target.

Stranraer failed to really deal with a Slater free-kick into the box as Forfar kept the pressure on.

Eventually, Slater and Martin Rennie exchanged a clever one-two before the midfielder finished beyond Lane.

All credit to Stranraer, who immediately fought back.

Stafford made a brilliant save with his feet to keep out a Quigg header and Stranraer forced corner after corner as they attempted to get back in front.

The continued pressure paid off as the game entered the final 10 minutes.

Substitute Lang swung in a tempting cross and Edgar rose highest to power home a header beyond a helpless Stafford.

Any chance of a comeback was quickly killed off as Stranraer extended their lead.

Fellow replacement Dominic Plank had already drove at the Forfar defence before he saw a shot blocked.

Deryn Lang’s goal rounded off a perfect day for the Blues

It fell into the path of Lang and he reacted quickly to turn the loose ball home.

A deserved victory for Stranraer who have already surpassed their points tally for the first quarter of the campaign after just two games of quarter two.
