Scorers: Stranraer – Robertson (87); Elgin City – Murray (82)
Scott Robertson’s header three minutes from time salvaged a point for Stranraer just as it looked like hopes were beginning to fade.
The substitute nodded home Mark Russell’s cross to cancel out Jack Murray’s header just five minutes prior.
The Blues had a change between the sticks with Harry Broun coming in for Jacob Pazikas, who was named on the bench.
And it was Broun who was the first goalkeeper called into action just after the quarter hour mark.
Elgin were looking to make it three wins out of three when they made the long journey south and came close through Dylan Gavin.
His fierce volley from outside the box stung the palms of the goalkeeper and the same man then nodded against the crossbar with the Stranraer shotstopper well and truly beaten.
The double chance seemed to spark Stranraer more into action and they were unlucky not to go in front at the midway point of the half.
Some lovely interplay involving Dean Hawkshaw and Elliott Dunlop saw the on-loan Airdrie man take aim at goal from fully 25 yards.
However, this time, it was goalkeeper Thomas McHale who proved equal to it as he pushed the ball to safety.
Mark Gallagher then curled a free-kick over the bar in an entertaining first half which featured chances for both teams.
Elgin probably had the better of the first half but Stranraer came out in determined fashion after the break.
The Blues clocked up a number of corners but could not find a way to create a genuine chance or call McHale into action.
Instead, chances were few and far between until the final 20 minutes.
Elgin came within a whisker of getting their noses in front when Stranraer failed to clear the ball from the box.
It dropped nicely for Dayshonne Golding and his volley beat Broun only for the perfectly placed Craig Ross to hack it clear off the line.
Then, with seven minutes to go, Elgin broke the deadlock.
Russell Dingwall swung in a free-kick from the left and Murray got in between defenders and goalkeeper to nod the ball home.
Time was running out for Stranraer to find a leveller but they conjured it up with just three minutes left on the clock.
Russell swung the ball in and Robertson’s glancing header was just beyond the reach of the diving McHale.
In the end, both teams had to settle for a point as Stranraer now turn attention to a trip to the New Dundas Park home of Bonnyrigg Rose.
