Scorers: Gallagher (55) and Carrick (90)
STRANRAER slipped to bottom of the League One table as second half goals sent Airdrie top of the pile.
The Blues were again missing players through injury, with Adam Cummins, Ryan Thomson and David Smith joining Grant Gallagher on the sidelines.
Stevie Farrell made three changes with club captain Jamie Hamill brought back into the team alongside Cameron Elliott and Mark Stewart.
It was a first half which produced little in the way of goalmouth action.
Indeed, Stranraer’s two best opportunities came from crosses into the Airdrie box.
Firstly, on 20 minutes, Andy Stirling swung in a teasing ball which David Hutton had to punch clear with Stewart ready and waiting to nod the ball into the net.
Two minutes later and Elliott’s deflected cross had the Airdrie number one scrambling but he got back to touch it to safety.
The best chance of the opening 45 minutes would come for the visitors as Stranraer lost possession in the middle of the park.
Kurtis Roberts slotted the ball through the stretched defence with Calum Gallagher racing onto the ball.
He waited for Max Currie to commit himself but then pulled his shot across the goal and wide of the post.
The former Dumbarton man made amends just ten minutes after the restart when Airdrie broke the deadlock.
Stranraer failed to clear the ball in the box and Callum Smith found an unmarked Gallagher, who fired home, despite the best efforts of Currie to keep the ball out.
The home side pushed an increasing number of men forward with Ian Smith, Leon Murphy and David Dangana all thrown on in a bid to find the leveller.
Dangana glanced a header wide while Connor McManus had a tame shot on target.
As the Blues gambled and put more men forward, they ran the risk of being caught at the back.
Twice, Airdrie could have put the game to bed but twice Currie and his defence stood tall.
First, substitute Alistair Roy broke clear before cutting inside Lee Hamilton, only for Currie to come to the rescue.
Then, Roy got on the end of Dale Carrick’s through ball but he waited too long and the defence got back.
Unfortunately, that was just delaying the second goal and Airdrie wrapped up the victory in stoppage time.
Good play on the left by Leon McCann saw the ball whipped in and Carrick got in first to fire in off the underside of the bar.
The Blues dropped below Forfar on goal difference at the foot of the table and will be looking to get a confidence boosting result against Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup next week.
