ADAM CUMMINS missed a late penalty as Stranraer finished their tough pre-season schedule with defeat to Coleraine.

The visitors barely troubled the Blues defence but a goal against the run of play proved the difference between the teams.

Indeed, Stranraer took the game to the Northern Irish Premiership side throughout and could have gone ahead in the early exchanges.

Local winger James Hilton pounced on a loose ball and dragged his shot just wide, with Cummins denied by the keeper minutes later after rising to meet a Jordan Allan corner.

The only goal would arrive on 23 minutes, despite protests from the Stranraer players for offside.

Ian Parkhill raced onto a through ball past the static home defence, and with only home keeper Max Currie to beat, the striker rolled a simple pass for Jamie Glackin to tap home.

Hilton came close once more after a good bit of skill, jinking past the defender only for his shot to whistle wide.

Despite the friendly nature of the contest no quarter was given by either side, with physical challenges going unpunished and several Stranraer players getting a dressing down from match referee Craig Napier for their protests.

Ryan Thomson, Carlo Pignatiello and Adam Cummins all threatened for the hosts in the opening 45 minutes but could not find the net.

New signing David Dangana was introduced at the break along with Dale Burgess, with Cameron Elliott, Ian Smith and a young trialist entering from the bench on the hour mark.

The youngster made an immediate impact, turning neatly before his run down the byline ended in a collision with the defender, but the referee waved away his penalty appeals.

Blues substitute keeper Burgess was finally called action in the closing stages, catching Gareth McConaghie's direct strike from the free kick before later denying Ben Docherty from close range.

Another goal looked likely and it was Stranraer who eventually got the rub of the green.

Pigntiello showed quick feet to dance his way past two challenges on the byline and feed Elliott, who dodged one tackle only to see his shot blocked by the arm of Stephen O'Donnell.

With the penalty awarded and a chance to level the scoring, up stepped Cummins - a reliable penalty taker for Queen's Park and Stranraer in previous seasons.

Unfortunately on this occasion his effort was well over the bar.

It meant the crowd of travelling Coleraine supporters would have something to celebrate.on the ferry home, but left Stranraer without a win in their four pre-season fixtures.

However, the real stuff gets underway on Tuesday 16 July at the Falkirk Stadium, where Stevie Farrell's men will begin their Betfred Cup campaign.
