STRANRAER were left stunned at Stair Park as Brechin City broke Blues hearts with two late goals.

Stevie Farrell made just one enforced change from the side which started against Arbroath.

Local goalkeeper Lyle Avci had performed well in his baptism of fire against the league leaders three days earlier following Max Currie's sending off, and earned his first league start.

Early chances came and went for Stranraer, with Innes Cameron, Kyle Turner and Ali McCann all unable to find the net.

The Blues had a penalty appeal turned down by referee John McKendrick after Kyle Turner appeared to be manhandled in the box.

Brechin grew into the contest, with Avci making a fine double stop to deny Ross Kavanagh, before former Blues winger Craig Thomson spurned an opportunity when through on goal.

There were further appeals from Stranraer players as Grant Anderson's strike caught Paul McLean's arm in the penalty area, but again McKendrick said no.

Brechin had the ball in the net just before half time as Dougie Hill's header was bundled home at the back post, but the goal was ruled out.

The best chance for Stranraer would arrive on the hour mark.

Joao Victoria did well to close down former Dundee United defender Lewis Toshney and raced through one on one with Brechin goalkeeper Patrick O'Neil.

Victoria looked to wrong-foot the keeper, but delayed just long enough for Toshney to recover and clear.

With Avci called to make several noteworthy saves, and Anderson, Brownlie, Cameron and Hamill unable to convert half-chances for Stranraer, the match was finely poised for a grandstand finish.

Unfortunately for the home side, it would be Brechin who struck late.

Veteran striker Andy Jackson produced a deft backheeled flick at the near post to convert an 89th minute corner.

With the Blues pushing for an equaliser in stoppage time, Thomson - who had a spell on loan at Stranraer in the 2016/17 season - made up for his earlier error by slotting home after a quick counter attack.
