STRANRAER overcame the scorching summer heat at Broadwood to cruise to a comprehensive friendly win over Cumbernauld Colts.

From the outset, the Blues were on the front foot and never looked in danger of anything other than perhaps dehydration.

The soaring temperatures presented a significant challenge to both teams, with the referee stopping play several times to allow the players the chance to take on fluids.

Stranraer had fielded a trialist striker in their 4-2 win at Annan on Tuesday night, and he returned to the lineup again, with two more trialists appearing from the bench.

The frontman sent a warning to the home side as he met Lamont's cross to send a glancing backwards header crashing off the post.

Sure enough, Stevie Farrell's fledgling side would break the deadlock after 23 minutes.

Grant Anderson found space on the right hand side of the box and tucked a powerful low strike into the bottom corner - in almost identical fashion to the goal he scored against Annan just four days earlier.

Following a quick water break for both sides, the visitors were soon at it again.

Lamont sent in another pinpoint delivery and this time the trialist striker was on target, popping up at the near post to fire home a header which slipped through the keeper's hands and into the top corner.

With the visitors unable to muster an answer, the Blues struck a third.

He may be yet to score his first competitive goal for the senior team, but Chris McGowan was a regular scorer for the U20s prior to his call-up.

The full back displayed composure beyond his years as he met Anderson's low ball into the box, coolly sending the keeper the wrong way and slotting into the bottom corner.

The fourth would arrive when Ashmore rounded off a fine team move to sweep home a fine bottom corner finish.

Those three goals in eight first half minutes killed off any hopes of a contest, with Stevie Farrell making five changes at the break and switching to three at the back.

Cumbernauld had one or two good chances in the second period, but there would be only one more goal, and it fell for Stranraer.

The trialist striker did his chances no harm at all with a well-taken finish, collecting substitute David Smith's inviting ball to bury his second goal of the afternoon.

And any hopes of late consolation for the Lowland League side were dashed as Blues keeper Currie rounded off a quiet afternoon with a good reflex stop from the onrushing Colts forward.

Stranraer now prepare for the second half of their busy pre-season fixture list, with three games in just five days.

League 1 champions Ayr United make the short trip down the A77 for a tantalising pre-season clash at Stair Park on Tuesday 3 July (7.30pm).

A testimonial match at Newton Stewart follows on the Friday evening (7.30pm), before a home encounter with Stirling Albion on the Saturday (3pm).

Stranraer: Avci (Currie), Brownlie, A Trialist (Smith), McDonald, McGowan (Hamill), Anderson (Elliott), Ashmore (Hamill), McManus, Lamont (D Trialist), B Trialist, C Trialist (E Trialist).
