Stranraer FC are delighted to confirm that, following our invitation, Dutch Eredivisie giants FC Twente have agreed to a pre-season friendly at Stair Park on Saturday 8 July.
Stevie Farrell's men will have the opportunity to test their skills against a 'Tukkers' first team flooded with quality, including several international stars.
Notable former FC Twente players include current English Premiership stars Dusan Tadic, Marko Arnautovic, Leroy Fer and Nacer Chadli, and former SPL competitors Ronald de Boer, Michael Mols, Theo Snelders and Arthur Numan.
It will be only the second time in our near 150 year history that Stranraer FC have played against a team from outwith these shores - GAK Graz of Austria being the previous international visitors during a friendship tour in the 1950s.
The contest will be a perfect curtain raiser for the Blues - just one week before the Betfred Cup group stage begins - and forms an important part of the 'Stranraer 400' celebrations, marking the 400th anniversary of the town becoming a Royal Burgh.
Hailing from the city of Enschede - 520 miles from Stranraer - the 2009/10 Eredivisie winners have a long-standing friendship with our club. In 2011, the inaugral FC Twente Festival of Football (VIDEO) took place at Stair Park, and the Dutch club have returned in recent years to continue their efforts in developing local youngsters.
Many supporters of 'The Pride of the East' are anticipated to make the journey to Galloway, not only to enjoy the game, but to make and rekindle friendships that have grown over the last 10 years.
We look forward to welcoming the FC Twente contingent back to Wigtownshire.
