The young Blues suffered only their second defeat in 10 games to local rivals Ayr United at Cumnock.

Ayr deservedly ran out 3-0 winners after racing to a 2-0 half time lead through goals from McKenzie and McCowan. The scoring was completed 2 minutes into the second half with a solo effort from the lively McKenzie.

The 20s entertained Clyde on Sunday afternoon at the home of Benburb Juniors and ran out convincing winners to move up to 2nd in the SPFL Development League West.

The game started with Chris McGowan slotting into the back four in place of the unavailable John Mitchell and young Ross McKenzie coming into midfield.

The Blues went ahead after 6 minutes through exciting midfielder Cameron Elliott, who cut in from the left to place a right footed shot into keeper Cammy King’s bottom left hand corner.

Clyde equalised from a counter attack after 16 minutes when Aaron Miller converted a cross from the pacy David Connolly, but Stranraer responded minutes later as Kieran McLaughlin’s driving run from the halfway line took him past three defenders to slot past King.

Elliott then produced a carbon copy of his first by beating two defenders on the bye line to place the ball into the bottom left hand corner and make it 3-1.

McKenzie timed a run into the box to receive an intelligent defence-splitting pass from Jai Holland and power a shot past King high into the net to put the Blues even further ahead.

Having switched to a 3-5-2 formation, Clyde once again came back into the game.

Although there were suspicions of offside when Miller was upended in the box by Blues keeper Ryan McLaren, he just beat the keeper from the spot with a low drive into the bottom right hand corner.

As the first half drew to a close, McLaren had a fantastic tip over the bar from a long range effort that was heading for the top right hand corner, but the second half saw Stranraer take control.

McKenzie repaid Holland's earlier compliment to dummy the keeper and roll in the 5th goal, which prompted Elliott being replaced after playing 30 minutes with the first team the previous day.

This allowing another youngster Danny O’Neill to slot in at centre back alongside the impressive Zack Simpson, with captain McGowan returning to his midfield berth.

McGowan responded in style with a 30 minute hat trick, before an excellent Gavin Scott finish and a diagonal drive into the top right hand corner completed the scoring.

Special mention also goes to Fraser Burns and Hamish McKinlay, who controlled play in the midfield and Ewan Farrell and David Gray who provided good support from the full back areas, in what was a thoroughly professional performance.

The young Blues return to New Tinto Park to face Albion Rovers on Sunday 19 November, with a 12noon kickoff.
