Stranraer U20s 3-0 Airdrieonians U20s
Sunday 22 October 2017
New Tinto Park
Scorers: McKenzie x2, Mitchell
Stranraer U20s recorded a remarkable 6th league win in 7 games against SPFL Development League West leaders Airdrieonians at New Tinto Park, home of Benburb Juniors.
With goalkeeper Ryan McLaren still recovering from injury and Max Currie unavailable, a 16 year old trialist was enlisted and helped the young Blues to their third clean sheet in a row.
The U20s had to dig deep in the first half, defending a strong wind and restricting the Diamonds to few chances thanks to resolute defending from John Mitchell and the returning Zack Simpson, who had missed 6 weeks due to injury.
The second half started brightly, with the young Blues pressing forward as full back David Gray’s overlapping runs and crosses into the box created several chances.
The opening goal arrived via a Kieran McLaughlan cross into the 6 yard box which the Airdrie defence could only scramble clear to Ross McKenzie, who confidently stroked the ball home from 10 yards.
McKenzie was on target again after 68 minutes, sending a header into the keeper's top right hand corner from a pinpoint David Gray cross.
And Stuart Wild's side sealed the win with 12 minutes remaining when a McLaughlin corner was headed home by John Mitchell from close range at the back post.
The win means Stranraer rise to 2nd in SPFL Development League West, just one point behind Airdrie.
Attention now turns to the SYFA Youth Cup tie with Queen of the South at Palmerston Park on Friday 3 November, with a 7.30pm kickoff.
