ISAAC LAYNE returned to haunt Stranraer as Dumbarton ran out 3-1 winners at the Rock.
Leon Murphy's picture-perfect free kick had the Blues in front, but Layne notched up a double either side of Reghan Tumilty's debut strike to seal victory for his new club.
Stevie Farrell welcomed Ryan Thomson back to the starting lineup in place of the injured Carlo Pignatiello, with Mark Stewart and James Hilton returning to the bench.
In the opposition dugout, Jim Duffy named ex-Blues Isaac Layne, PJ Crossan, Morgyn Neill and Conor Brennan in his side.
Layne posed a threat in the early going, but it would be the Blues who took the lead with 20 minutes played.
Midfielder Ryan Thomson won a free kick in a good position, with Leon Murphy and Jamie Hamill standing over it.
Ayr United loanee Murphy struck the set piece sweetly into the top corner to record the first league goal of his senior career, leaving Brennan no chance.
However the lead would last for only five minutes.
Layne capitalised after a series of blocks from the Stranraer defence to find the net from close range.
Stranraer created chances as the half wore on, with Hamilton unfortunate not to connect as he slid in to meet Connor McManus' low ball.
And Jordan Allan dragged a shot wide with five minutes left of the opening 45.
Unfortunately for the Blues, it would be Dumbarton who took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half.
That early pressure from the hosts paid off as debutant Tumilty found the bottom corner from the edge of the box after a mesmerising run from Layne.
With Stranraer pushing on for an equaliser, Layne killed the game with a well-taken goal.
The striker had space and time to turn and fired past Dale Burgess in the Stranraer goal.
As the Blues attempted to mount an unlikely comeback, the returning James Hilton twice came close after replacing goalscorer Leon Murphy for the closing stages.
Hilton's long range strike flashed over the bar, before his free kick in the dying moments was turned just wide.
But that was as close as Stranraer would come, with Peterhead next up at Stair Park on Saturday 31 August.
