Queen's Park U20s 2-1 Stranraer U20s
Wednesday 6 December 2017
Scorers: Queen's Park - Miller (7), Manderson (24); Stranraer - McKenzie (89)
Stranraer U20s travelled to Lesser Hampden to take on Queen's Park - the only one of the 9 teams in SPFL Development League West they were yet to beat this season.
The game was played in driving wind and rain, with both teams finding it difficult to get the ball down and play entertaining football.
Blues goalkeeper Ryan McLaren didn't have a save to make in the entire game, yet picked the ball out of the net twice in the first half after two examples of poor defending cost his side dearly.
The deadlock was broken just 7 minutes in, as Ali Miller took advantage of indecision in the Stranraer defence to nick the ball and stroke it into the empty net.
Queen’s doubled their lead from a corner on the left, Calvin McGrory crossing for Joseph Manderson to fire the ball home.
Three changes at half time with O’Neill, McKenzie and Scott replacing Mitchell, McKinlay and Holland saw Stranraer start on the front foot and the running and link play from Gavin Scott caused the Queen’s defence problems.
However despite the 20s' probing and pressuring, Queen’s defence defended well.
A number of half chances came and went for Stranraer, and although the hosts always looked a danger on the counter attack, Simpson and O’Neill combined well in defence to give the Blues keeper another shot-free 45 minutes.
That elusive goal finally came for Stranraer after 87 minutes, as an accurate delivery from the left by Kieran McLaughlin rewarded Ross McKenzie's bright supporting run to allow the youngster to notch his 6th goal in 11 games from close range.
Unfortunately, it was too little too late and the Blues slumped to a disappointing defeat to a well-drilled Queen’s side, who moved within a point of Stranraer’s 2nd place with a game in hand.
