Alloa 1-1 SFC 30-09-06

ALLOA ATHLETIC 1-1 STRANRAER

Saturday 30th September 2006, Recreation Park, Alloa

As the game got under way it was Stranraer who looked the livelier, they were pressing forward early on in the hope of making an early breakthrough.  Kenny Wright had the Blues first half chance when Michael Moore brought down a forward pass and flicked it in the general direction of Wright, alas Wright whom is still not fully match fit displayed this status and shot just over the bar.  That seemed to spur Alloa into action and on eleven minutes they themselves created an effort when McAuley crossed in for Fraser Forest, however, his header went just wide.

Other half chances followed from David Hamilton, and Joe McAlpine also chanced his luck from range but without any joy. As the first half drew to a close, Stranraer probably shaded proceedings, however neither side had the killer touch to go in ahead at the break.

As the second half got under way it was Stranraer that led the charge and their early pressure paid off after a couple of minutes as the ball was played into the Alloa box and the ball was blatently handled by Scott Malcolm. David Hamilton stepped forward and tucked away the resulting penalty to put the Blues ahead.

Stranraer continued to probe and had the ball in the net shortly after when Alex Burns played a delightful ball through from midfield, Kenny Wright ran on to it and lobbed the on-rushing keeper superbly, however referee Mr Underhill took soundings from his assistant and chalked off the 'goal' for offside. This seemed to spark Alloa into action as they started to create opportunities themselves with Brown having a half chance followed by McKeown.

Alloa continued sorties forward, creating opportunities to level the game, however Scott Black in the Stranraer goal was outstanding, producing two double saves to keep out the home side. Inside the last three minutes Stranraer's luck ran out when an in-swinging corner caused palpitations in the Stranraer defence and the unfortunate Alex Burns who hadn't put a foot wrong all game then sliced the ball into his own net to level the scores.

It was unlucky for Stranraer but given the opportunities Alloa had created prior to the equaliser they did deserve to level the match.

A gap for internationals is now upon us so that will give the Blues players time to reflect and re-group ahead of the visit of Forfar Athletic on October 14th.
